As the school year in Goa
draws to a close we are already planning for the new
academic year. We know that a decent uniform, a school
bag and stationery can make all the difference as to
whether a child attends and remains in school. Such
basic things, however, are beyond the reach of families
living in poverty. At its simplest a child is not
allowed to enter school unless they are wearing a
uniform. But also having the supplies they need to keep
clean and carry out their studies boosts confidence and
self-esteem and encourages attendance. Both of these
things produce better academic results which mean it is
more likely that children will stay at school longer.
To support children by
providing school uniforms we have a Back2School Project
to read more about it. We also have a Bags4School
Project which provides a school bag and all the basic
essentials a child will need to go to attend school –
you can read more
here.
In 2014 we aim to provide
disadvantaged children with around 400 School uniforms.
In addition we aim to provide around 300 School Bags –
the pre-primary children will receive a bag and toiletry
items and the older children will receive a sturdy
school bag full of stationery, toiletries, an umbrella
and either a ball or hair accessories as a little treat
too (see opposite). We will also provide children at
Mango House with sandals for the monsoon and summer
shoes as required by school. We estimate these items will
cost around £4,500 and hope that supporters would like
to help us keep children in school by making a donation
to our Back To School Appeal. Even the smallest amount
is important.
It costs around £2.50 to
provide a pair of rainy sandals, £3.50 to provide an
empty school bag, £5 to provide a uniform and £7.50 to
provide a filled school bag.
Please give to our Back To School Appeal - Your
donation, no matter how small, really will make a big
difference to a disadvantaged child.
